Popular Music Group Los Gofiones
The musical group Los Gofiones is created in Las Palmas de Gran
Canaria (Canary Islands) on September 3rd 1968 when a set of young persons,
lovers of the old traditions of their people, meets with the aim of creating
a work of investigation and recovery in the canary folklore field.
On one year later Theatre Pérez Galdos, of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will be the
witness of the first performance of this group, as well as the recording of the
first one of their discs. The group, formed by 31 musicians, instrumentalists and
singers, went through all the scenaries of the canary archipelago, exported the popular
canary music towards the lands of the Iberic peninsula and made possible that their
musical work were also settled in Europe and in Latin America.
The vast work of discs creation of this Canary group, is completed by its presence
in numerous popular demonstrations of the Islands Fortunes archipelago, such as
traditional festivals, romerías, famous television programs, etc. The success of
the group can be noticed, not only in the very good critics appeared in the local
press during all its trajectory, but also in the gratitude of their fellow countrymen:
it gives its name to a street in the municipalities of Tegueste inTeneriffe, Puerto Del
Carmen in Lanzarote, and Telde and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the island of Gran
Canaria.
Los Gofiones received prestigious rewards and were the witnesses of the most important
and significant musical and other events of these last years, getting part for example
in meetings such as Atlántica or Womad, in the celebration of "Día de Canarias" on several
occasions, or giving the keynote speech of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Los Gofiones have shared scenaries with many of music great artists,
Celia Cruz, Joan Manuel Serrat, José Manuel Soto or Celina Rodríguez. Silvio Rodríguez
collaborated in the track generically entitled "Cuba".
More than thirty years of music , an ample discography on the market and
a lot of concerts, strengthened Los Gofiones as a symbolic group of the canary
popular music, besides constituting it as a reminder of the Canary people's identity.
